September 7, 2022 marks two years since historic wildfires burned more than one million acres across Oregon. Many communities are still working to rebuild and regain their identity while ensuring they are prepared as each fire season approaches.
We honor the lives lost, the men and women who stepped up to help, and the communities impacted by these fires.
Two years ago today, 179 fire agencies contributed resources to support communities where fires threatened lives and homes. The collective response included nearly 300 firefighting apparatus and more than 2,000 members of Oregon’s structural firefighting service.
State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple shared this message with the Oregon fire service:
“I am appreciative of your dedication to our mutual aid system and your leadership during the past two years. I say so often to our staff, “Never has such a small team, done so much”. After 28 years here with our office, I am always in awe of what you do to protect your communities and the state. Thank you all, I know our entire office remembers your work, the loss, and most importantly the service that laid out before us two years ago today.”
